Paper and posters

Use acid-free or archival-quality materials where practical, keep items flat when appropriate and avoid pressure-sensitive tape.

Buttons and metal objects

Separate metal pieces so edges and pins do not scratch neighboring objects. Keep the environment dry and stable.

Original packaging

Packaging can be part of an item’s provenance or presentation. Store it separately if it risks rubbing, staining or reacting with the object.

Maintain an inventory

Photograph both sides, record dimensions, purchase source, date and notes. A simple inventory makes future research much easier.
